TAOIST ARTS CENTER NY

Workshop:  Introduction to Tai Chi, Chi Kung and Meditation

Tai Chi, Chi Kung and Meditation can be practiced by everyone.

Introduction to Tai Chi, Chi Kung and Meditation explores the various forms of these Internal Arts shedding light on their origins and the factors that might influence your preference. Through discussion, demonstration and practice, you will gain insights into these ancient Chinese arts, with a special focus on the Wu style of Tai Chi, Chi Kung and Taoist Meditation

Tai Chi, Chi Kung and Meditation are integral parts of Traditional Chinese medicine, which emphasizes the use of internal energy (Chi), flowing movement and the mind.

Tai Chi's complex choreography is widely practiced for health, mental acuity and relaxation. Chi Kung, a similar but more basic Chinese art is more focused on individual movements and offers an easier entry

Chi Kung provides a foundational awareness that benefits those seeking health, relaxation and balance. Students in historical China, started their journey with the simpler movements of Chi Kung then advanced to  Tai Chi

Chi Kung's gentle introduction to the world of energy cultivation acts as a foundation for Tai Chi. Used as a preparatory practice, it helps students refine their awareness, relax their breath, coordinate their movements and heal their bodies. Among the many types of Chi Kung are martial chi kung, meditative chi kung and medical chi kung. This wide range of practices makes Chi Kung accessible to people of all ages and health conditions.

Tai Chi is more complex than Chi Kung. It is primarily practiced for its ability to circulate chi, enhance memory and increase strength, stamina and vitality. In this workshop Susan Rabinowitz will discuss the various Tai Chi styles and explain how they have emerged over time. You will learn about the historical contexts that gave rise to the different forms. From the warlike Chen style, to the smoothly flowing Yang style and the  especially gentle Wu style, you will discover the nuances that make each style distinct.

Meditation is a way to unite mind, body heart and soul. It calms thoughts, relaxes the body and creates a feeling of inner peace. Taoist meditation is a unique form of meditation that uses the energies of body and mind to resolve difficulties and attain a clear relaxed spirituality. Progressing from the physical through the psychological to the spiritual Taoist meditation leads students to balance and harmony with themselves and the universe around them.

The essence of our workshop lies in active participation. To provide you with a tangible experience, our workshop will feature a live demonstration of Wu style Tai Chi where you can witness its flowing movements, deliberate transitions, and smooth energy flow. Through guided sessions, you will have the opportunity to engage in Tai Chi and Chi Kung movements and gain a personal understanding of their effects on your body and mind.

As you delve into their origins and characteristics, you will gain insight into why you might gravitate towards Tai Chi, Chi Kung or Meditation. Factors like personal fitness, health and your individual temperament can all play a role in determining which practice resonates most with you.
