During her third year of medical school, Liza H. Leal, MD, was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. She entered her family practice residency in a wheelchair. After searching for alternative therapies to ease her pain she found the combination of Tai Chi, acupuncture and Chinese herbal remedies beneficial.
Western science isn’t sure how Tai Chi and acupuncture actually work, but evidence is accumulating that they do help patients with arthritis and other forms of chronic pain.
In fact, the World Health Organization has concluded they may be helpful for several conditions including osteoarthritis, headache, gastritis, bronchitis, and low back pain.
