taoist-arts.com News: Doctors use Chi Kung for Healing (Posted 11/24/2001)
Suppressed during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, the practice of Chi Kung (also called Qigong) became popular again in the 1980’s. Toady, it is practiced by 70 million Chinese and the method is studied by western psychologists and physicians.
Related to a set of disciplines that includes Tai Chi Chuan, there are more than 3,000 types of qigong and five major traditions.
Medical qigong is the cultivation and deliberate control of a higher form of vital energy, an ancient philosophical system that integrates the human body with the universe. It stimulates circulation of blood and chi (the breath of life), improves the delivery of oxygen to the cells, reduces stress, and improves digestion. Chinese doctors believe the practice of Chi Kung will help the body function of a person who is sick return to normal. Practitioners say it allows them to gain control over their life force.
