The Journal of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine writes that researchers were able to predict with 90% accuracy which patients would report improvement in their health and which would not. Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and several life threatening diseases who practiced mind/body techniques such as meditation or chi kung daily tripled their chances of recovery within a 12 month period.
This study consited of 70 patients randomly assigned to either a group which learned and practiced mindfullness techniques such as meditation and chi kung or to a control group which did not. Those patients who both learned and practiced the mind/body techniques at least 3 days a week and who had a good social ties improved the most.
Similar findings have been reported with other diseases. Researchers at Stanford Medical school have found that women with metastatic breast cancer doubled their survival time with the help of social support and mind/body medicine, while studies at UCLA Medical School have found improved survival rates in malignant melanoma (a form of skin cancer), as well as reduced symptoms in AIDS patients. Other studies have found similar benefits for heart disease and hypertension.
